Finished Ragtime by E. L. Doctorow. This was also for 30 by 30 and the Rescue Project.
Not a big fan, although the fault may be mine as the cover blurb says that Time said it was one of the 10 best books of the decade.
It's set in America at the turn of the century and is about a family (father, mother, their son and the mother's brother) and about a Jewish man and his daughter. Their lives eventually intersect, but they also intersect with Houdini, Henry Ford, J.P. Morgan and Emma Goldman.
