The Academy has jumped the shark, I think. Maybe they thought the Oscars ceremony was too short. Next year, it will be an all-day event, and the audience members will receive complimentary catheters so they can sit through it all.
I agree with your complaint. I think this is a vehicle for more shows to get the "Oscar-nominated" tag -- but of course, by doubling the nominees, they've devalued it. I bet they get rid of this in a year or two.
Since there can still only be one winner, it seems to me the only reason to do this would be for marketing of the DVD's. being able to market something as a 'nominee' is a selling advantage.
I felt iffy about this at first, but less so when I found out that they had 10 nominees for Best Picture back in The Day. I kinda hope it'll bring some deserved recognition to worthy comedies or animated features. But oh man, if those extra nominations go to something like Transformers or New Moon, I'll barf forever.

And I'm happy to find someone else who doesn't think Slumdog Millionaire should've won! I actually saw it after the Oscars and while I thought it was a great movie, I'm not sure I think it Best Picture worthy. Actually I was rooting for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button--but I think I was the only one. :(

Side note: I'm adding you to my neighborhood! (If you don't mind!)

Welcome to my neighborhood! :) I talk a lot about books and movies.

I haven't seen Benjamin Button yet, but I saw the other three, and preferred all three of them to Slumdog. I'm sure when I see CCoBB, that will continue the trend.

The example I always go with is that I LOVE Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. It's one of my favorites and I laugh incredibly hard every time I see it. I adore it to an extent that I can't even say. But I'm glad it wasn't nominated for an Oscar, because it shouldn't be.

Very good point. I'm trying to stay optimistic about what kind of movies will fill those extra 5 slots, but I don't think I'll be too surprised if the Academy disappoints.

I would've loved to see Wall-E up for best picture last year, though. :)
I loved that movie, but I think if you're going to submit for Best Picture, you can't also compete in Best Animated. No hedging your bets. :)
You know them's fighin' words right? I loved LOVED Slumdog. :)

Anyway, I'm like you...trepidatious about this new plan. But unlike you I'm convinced that New Moon will be the best move ever....until Eclipse comes out.

(cackles her insane laughter into her hand so that the people in the coffee shop don't look at her too strangely)
Slumdog wasn't bad, but Milk totally should've won. (I preferred The Reader and Frost/Nixon, too.)
