News & Politics QotD: House Dems vs. the White House
On Thursday, House Democrats refused to hold a vote on a Senate-approved bill that would permanently expand the government's eavesdropping authority and grant immunity to telecommunications companies that helped the government monitor conversations in the past. Do you agree with the White House that the Democrats are weakening America's defenses against terrorism?
No. I've heard all the "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about" arguments, and I think it's total crap.
Think about the stuff you talk about on the phone. Think about the intensely personal stuff you tell your friends--the fight you had with your significant other, stories of name calling and heartbreak and sex and guilt and anger. And just because I'm not planning to overthrow the government doesn't mean that I don't care about them hearing that stuff. You can't just go around listening to people to get proof that they're going to do something wrong.
