How do you feel about your birthday? Do you look forward to it and remind all your friends, or do you dread it and try to keep it a secret?
I so look forward to my birthday. I plan (usually) big elaborate things. I didn't last year because I only knew two people here. I usually have several things going on, like a bar trip and a movie and a party and dinner. And it's basically like, make whatever you can.
My actual birthday's on a Thursday this year, so I'm off. That'll probably be either dinner or movie. Friday will be the bar trip ($2.50 Cosmos! Free shrimp!) and party. Saturday night may be the movie. Which reminds me, I should ask off for that Saturday or see if Debbie and I can switch. Except I'll want Debbie to come.
Oh, decisions, I hate you.
Who is ringing in the New Year with you? Who do you wish could be with you, but isn't there?
I am ringing in the New Year with various coworkers, as I will be working tonight. Odds are good that after I cut video from the 6, I'll run home and get Sam because I'm probably going to be at work until 12:30 or 1am. (Stupid fireworks. Stupid slideshow.)
So yeah, late night.
Either way, I should be home no later than 1:15, and I have every expectation that this will be like last year and I'll have the road largely to myself. (No self-respecting drunk is going to leave a party much before 2 or 3 a.m.)
My friends Josh and Jon throw the best New Year's parties. I'm a little bummed that I won't get to go (second year in a row) but New Year's is really my least favorite holiday anyway. I mean, sure, the parties are fun and alcohol is always good, but I hate fireworks. And people get really bitchy when you say that, have you noticed? My mom swears I'm just trying to be different, but really, they're just loud and usually not all that pretty.
Even so. Should you like fireworks, please check out our live stream starting at 11 and our kickass slideshow which will be going up as soon as I can arrange it.
Which breed of dog is your favorite? Post a picture of it.

I like silky terriers like Sam
and yorkies like Jack.
What's on your holiday wishlist?
See list at sidebar. Probably what I want the most is a book called Lyra's Oxford, which is a short story that bridges the Dark Materials trilogy with the new book that he's writing.
What is your daily commute like? What is the weirdest thing you've seen on that commute?
Submitted by E.
My commute is insanely easy. It's about a ten minute drive and I'm on the same road for about eight of those minutes. :) (Could be 15, depending on traffic and lights.)
Because of my work schedule, I miss rush hour both times. It's pretty cool.
I haven't seen anything weird on my commute but one time, Jen and I were in her car going to the movies. We stopped at a red light and suddenly these two guys started fighting on the corner. It was pretty funny. The light turned green, though, so we left. (Plus, if two guys are randomly fighting, the situation could easily get worse.)
What are your irrational fears?
Submitted by Dan Culhane.I don't have irrational fears. Clowns are scary. So are snakes. Also bees.
List five reasons (at least) why you are awesome.

I almost didn't do this because it feels like bragging and I'm not good at bragging. But then I thought, what kind of person do I want to be? Do I want to be the person who can stand up and say, "You know what? I really am kind of awesome" or the person who whines and says, "Oh, I'm too fat and I'm too quiet and I'm a hermit and I'm shy..." and the kind of person who fishes for compliments, whether consciously or not.
So then I realized, yeah. I am kind of awesome. And if you don't see that, here are some reasons why.
1) I have fantastic friends--smart, sweet, witty--I could keep going, but frankly, you'd try to poach them and we can't have that. And since like attracts like...
2) I have the coolest job ever (that isn't a movie reviewer. That would be cooler) and it's hard and stressful but I can get it all done in a timely fashion.
3) I can be by myself and not freak out. That sounds like a lame reason, but seriously, how many people do you know who always have to have someone around? Not just they always have to be in a relationship, but they always have to be out doing something because they can't handle being alone with their thoughts. I need alone time, which may be because I'm an only child. (Don't feel sorry for me--being an only child is awesome and I wouldn't change it for anything.) (Yes, I have a half-sister but I still identify as an only child. It's not like we're close.)
4) I read. If you don't read books sometimes, know that I judge you. I don't care what you read or how long it takes you to read a book. You could read what I read or Danielle Steel or neo-con propaganda or whatever. Books are good. Don't be the people that are contributing to the downfall of active literacy in our country.
5) My friends say I am. Often enough that I even start to believe it.
(Also? I know where the best sushi is, I buy awesome birthday presents and good-to-great Christmas ones, I say "Happy holidays" because I know that not everyone celebrates Christmas, I'm a good and loyal friend, my mom says I'm a wonderful daughter and mother to Sam, and finally, because I know all the words to Ice Ice Baby.)
If you could get everyone in the world to change their behavior in one way, what would you have them do differently?
Submitted by Ross.
I wouldn't, because if we were all the same, it would be pretty boring.
Although it would be nice if people weren't such jerks all the time. Also? Just because a Democrat says something doesn't mean it's stupid or wrong. (And same with the Republicans.)
I've heard people argue with common-sense statements just because a Democrat said them. It's so insanely obnoxious. Yes. You're conservative and you only support what Republican politicians say. WE GET IT. Ooooh, you're so cool.
(I'm annoyed with us, too--our previous Republican governor tried for eight years to get slots passed; our current governor, a Democrat, had to work just for a year or so.)
Sorry about the rant. It's very early and I'm very tired. But for the most part, I'd keep people the way they are.
